Description: "Child Lying on a Rug, 1904" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "Good painters often come to grief when painting children, when they cross, either deliberately or inadvertently, the razor's edge separating sentiment from sentimentality. But Vuillard knew children well and in this delightful picture he holds firmly to the side of reasonable sentiment. He even injects a good deal of tactful humor into this scene, where a golden-haired baby crawls helplessly across the rich Oriental rug, the only bit of human animation in the magnificent solemnity of the room with its superb formally arranged eighteenth-century French furniture. Obviously this little loved one is no member of the painter's family. It is possibly the child of one of Madame Hessel's friends, who must be anxiously watching the scene with a starched nursery-maid in attendance. The humor lies not only in the baby's bewilderment but in the subtlety with which Vuillard looks at the room through the eyes of a child, painting the furniture larger than life and seeing it mainly as a forest of legs. The compositional arrangement is exquisite, the sumptuous delicacy of color wholly remarkable, and the child far too natural and lively to risk becoming a doll woven into the pattern."
