Carpenter Jr. formerly the "lonesome end" of football at the United States Military Academy, receives the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest honor for bravery in combat from Lieutenant General Edgar C. Doleman during ceremony at Schofield Barracks November 9th. Carpenter was honored for his June 1966 action in Vietnam when he called in a napalm attack against his own position to save his company from being overrun by Viet Cong guerillas.
