This new band, with its unique sound and style, would go on to influence and shape a new genre of music, known as funk, which would become highly popular for the following decades. Brown began his career in entertainment in the early 1950s, following a brief period in a juvenile detention center, and would go on to achieve great acclaim during his illustrious career that continues to influence musicians and entertainers to this day. This concert was scheduled only one year after his first mainstream hit, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," was released and would mark Brown's transition into a national star as well as a turning point in his sounds, which would become entirely transformed by 1967 into a complete funk sound that would change the landscape of popular music in the United States.
