Description: I borrowed this description from a previous sale on Ebay of what I think is the knife I have that sold for $1200. I have compared this knife and while I may be biased, I feel this knife is it better condition with the box. The 5-1/2 inch 72 pattern Clasp knife was designed, marketed, and built as a large, stout hunters knife during the 1920-1939 Tested era. Its the largest single clip blade knife in the Case lineup and when you see one of these big beauties in person you immediately know it as being so. Regrettably, the production of this pattern was short-lived as, for whatever reason, they were discontinued prior to World War II. Like many discontinued patterns, decades later, during the USA era of 1965-1969, Case elected to bring it back, at which time it would become better known as a Bulldog. All but one single model displayed an etching of our canine friend on the blade and this is that one model. Its a prototype, no etching, built during 1965. As sometime happens with several patterns that were discontinued and then brought back at a later date, Case will make a prototype to get feedback prior to production beginning, and thats precisely what this piece represents. There is no Bulldog etching on the blade, which is the only manner one can determine it to be a prototype. Lately the word PROTO or PROTOTYPE is etched into a blade, but this was not the case when this prototype was produced back in 1965. For those of you having Tony Fosters last price guide, take a look at what these 1965 Prototype 5172 Bulldogs are valued at, you'd be surprised! This beautiful prototype Bulldog shows no signs it was ever used. The mirror finished clip blade has amazing snap without a trace of wobble. The thick stag is beautifully matched from side to side and remains in factory new condition and is free of chips or cracks. Both large bolsters and the double oval Case shield are in outstanding condition as well as the is the backspring. Even though factory records do not show the number of these Prototypes produced, you will not see many, if any at all, available here or elsewhere due to their scarcity. Please examine the pictures carefully as they are a major part of the description! The knife shows superficial imperfections from handling over the years. Buyer to pay insured shipping of $29 to the USA ONLY. Thanks for looking and good luck
