Description: This is a very rare 1965 "Passport Kingdom of Whisky A GoGo" from London. A true piece of Rock n Roll History. This was a former nightclub that opened around 1959 in London. From the research I have done it appears this "Passport" and the stamp inside saying "Students United Social Association" indicate that this club was attempting to get around the royalty laws in England at the time. Evidently, if the establishment was a school or associated with learning they didn't have to pay royalties to play the music on their jukeboxes in their clubs. It is stamped Jan 1965 and has the personal info of the individual on the inside. When closed it measures 2.5" X 3.75". Located at 33/37 Wardour Street, the Whisky A Go Go was a major rock music venue during the mid-late 1960s and was situated in the same building as the Flamingo Club. Members of major groups of the time such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix were all regular visitors. In the mid-Sixties the club attracted many major artists from the other side of the Atlantic such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and His Comets, Stevie Wonder and John Lee Hooker. The club, renamed WAG around 1981, was where Buddy Holly (1958) gave a press conference prior to his 25-date tour of the UK. It is also the location where David Bowie's "Blue Jean" video was filmed. Even more interesting is that this "Passport" was issued to Cheryl R. Stein, the noted television production executive. Ms. Stein was long associated with Aaron Spelling Productions and worked on such series as Dynasty, 7th Heaven, Malibu Shores, Winnetka Road, Matt Huston, Crossings, Hotel, and Summerland. She was also the Associate Producer of a number of television movies including Home of the Brave, James Michener's Texas, Day One, Cracked Up, and Just Life. More recently she served as the Associate Producer of the Jesse Stone series of TV movies starring Tom Selleck. Ms. Stein passed away in 2017. This item was purchased from her estate.
