Description: Handsome color lithographed fold-out map of the upper reaches of the Northern Hemisphere — all of the territory above 50° N. latitude. The coverage area is centered on the North Pole and includes notations on discoveries made by various explorers, including Amundsen, Ross, Schmidt, Wellman, Nansen, Byrd, and Peary. The map locates glaciers, ocean currents, and water depths, and it shows airports, early warning lines, major cities, and the southern limits of drift ice. It also traces the path of Fletcher's Ice Island, or T-3, adrift in the Arctic Ocean. Between 1952 and 1978 it was used as a manned scientific drift station that included huts, a power plant, and a runway for wheeled aircraft. Sometime after July 1983, the iceberg eventually worked its way to the outside of the Arctic ice pack, where it caught a southern current, drifting off into the Atlantic Ocean and finally melted away. Other named places and features include Hudson Bay, West Spitzbergen, Beaufort Sea, Franz Josef Land, Ellesmere Island, Gulf of Boothia, Queen Elizabeth Islands, Foxe Peninsula, District of Franklin, Alaska, Iceland, Russia, Finland, Canada, and more. The map opens to 19" x 25" and is drawn on a scale of 1:20,021,760. It was published by the National Geographic Society as a supplement to the November 1965 The National Geographic Magazine. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
