Description: PRINTS BOOKS PHOTOGRAPHS MANUSCRIPTS CURIOSITIES - STUNNING REPRODUCTIONS OF THE LARGE FOLIO PLATES FROM CURTIS'S CLASSIC WORK, ELEPHANT FOLIO, 70CM X 51.5CM -[CURTIS (Samuel, English botanist and publisher, 1779-1860)]; [POPE (Clara Maria, English botanical artist, 1767-1838)]An excellent example of Traylen's 1965 large folio reproduction of 'Monograph of the Genus Camellia, by Samuel Curtis, F.L.S., the Whole from Original Drawings by Clara Maria Pope.' (Guildford): Charles W. Traylen, n.d. [1965]. Reproduction of the original 1819 title page, on the front flap and repeated again inside. Then 2pp of text from the original work, and then five large lithographic reproductions (again, from the 1819 originals), printed on thick paper stock. The whole bound together with staples with soft outer wraps. Size: Elephant folio - 70cm x 51.5cm.Near Fine condition. Almost unblemished, with just a hint of browning around the original staples on the outer spine of the text block, and a smidgen of edgewear. Collated and complete with all five plates as issued. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images. On offer here is an attractively presented folio containing five large and beautiful reproductions of plates of Camellias after Clara Maria Pope from Samuel Curtis's 1819 work. These reproduction plates are printed on thick paper stock, and are of an exceptionally high quality. The folio was published by the renowned Guildford printer Charles W. Traylen in 1965. A number of these folios were found in a storeroom in Guildford recently, in fine, unsold and 'as new' condition, where they had been stored for over 45 years, and we were fortunate enough to pick up the remaining stock. As they were stored for so long, the plates are almost as bright and new as the day they were published. Hence this is an ideal opportunity for the collector of botanical works or plates to 'step back in time' and acquire something that has long been out of print, but which is essentially 'as new' so long after publication. The only minor flaw being slight browning around the original staples, and a hint of edgewear. key words:
