Though littleknown in this country, the name Garelliin Italy describes one of the older moreestablished makers of motorcycles and mo-peds. Garellis are now being imported in aquantity suitable to satisfy the growing in-terest in lightweights. It is Italian in every respect: appearance, handling, performance, riding position, and design/construction. It would seem wewould grow tired of complaining aboutthe narrow hard seats, but not as longas they keep sending them over, and inthe case of the Garelli it is a minor flaw.A two-stroke, single-cylinder enginepowers the bike: its dimensions are bore/stroke of 40mm x 39mm, with a capacityof 49 cubic centimeters, or about threecubic inches. Horsepower is given as4.3. via the Italian C.U.N.A. methodwhich measures it at the rear wheel. Usingthe S.A.E. (Society of Automotive En-gineers) system, it should figure out tosomewhere around five or five and onehalf, since we measure it at the crank-shaft before the power to drive themachine has been robbed from the totalrating. We rather like the Italian system;it seems a mite more honest and practicalthan ours since the only usable poweris that which is left after subtractingthe losses through gears, chains, movingweight, etc.Four speeds are available from thegearbox, very important in getting thelittle machine underway and keeping itgoing. Performance is lively, top speedis a little over 52 miles per hour. Themakers quote the top speed as being 56mph, probably conceivable once the en-gine has loosened up and is freed from itsdelicate newness. Our system for checkingon low-powered machines’ top speeds isto simply measure with a stop watch theinterval between two measured markingson a stretch of road near our offices.More important than pure top speedon machines of this type is the abilityto maintain a safe and suitable cruisingspeed and to move through traffic. Herethe little Garelli really shines. Plentyof power is on tap through all the gears, enough to move along with all but thefastest traffic road racers even in cycleworld’s heavily traveled hometown.Ignition is by flywheel magneto withwindings for 6 volts of electric power forthe lights. Of course if the engine isn’tturning over quite fast, little power, hencelittle light, is available. It doesn’t reallymatter very much though, since one must“buzz” the engine to keep performanceup anyway. As with all machines of thistype, the engine and gearbox are in unitwith gear-driven primary and chain-driven secondary drive to the rear wheel. The elaborate silencer adds to the charmof the Garelli by producing a throatysound, not too loud, but a noise more oftensuggestive of a 90 or 125cc machine. The gearbox is an efficient, tidy littleaffair that works marvelously and nevermissed picking off the next gear. The gearchange lever is a rocking type, allowingone to “heel and toe” through the gears,a familiar little Italian dance we learnedto like long ago. Riders who prefer dressstyle shoes will welcome the opportunityto avoid grinding the leather off the topsof their shoe on this one. Only one ofseveral reasons why the Garelli Juniorrepresents a good buy. • 16260
