Description: Powerful and significant signed typed letter to James Baldwin by P.S. 24 Elementary School Teacher Orilla Winfield (1912-1990) regarding Baldwin's historic Civil Rights tour for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1963 and his professional and personal development. The letter is from an original letter she sent Baldwin in 1963. Winfield possibly re-wrote this letter shortly after his death for a Bladwin biography. Handwritten "Dear James", typed and signed "O". 8.5" x 5" chit has creasing, toning and paperclip rusting. Note: Orilla Winfield (aka Bill Miller) was an important figure in James' early life. She recognized his exceptional brilliance at a young age and took special interest in him. She took him to theaters, movies and other excursions. Miller directed the first play Baldwin wrote. Baldwin said Miller is the main the reason that he "never really managed to hate White people". According to Baldwin, she never lied to him and never exercised the cruelties he associated with whiteness.
