Description: 1963 Press Photo Carved cypress adorns staircase in the Ursuline Convent This is an original press photo. Carved cypress from massive trees which once grew in the area which is now the Vieux Carre adorns the free-standing staircase in the Ursuline Convent believed to be the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley. The present convent building, built circa 1749, replaced an older frame structure which was built between 1727 and 1734. It was common practice in those days to use materials from older buildings for new ones. This staircase is believed to have been constructed for the older building, then adapted to the new. The section is called the French Quarter. Buildings in the French style abound, yet one alone remains from the early French colonial period. This structure, the old Ursuline Convent, is the oldest, certainly one of the most important landmarks of the city's oft-neglected heritage, the Vieux Carre. Time and the hand of man have been kind to the old convent. Fire even spared it, so that today the appearance is not basically unlike that of the proud new building into which the Ursulines moved so thankfully 214 years ago. However, if those forces which are always working to destroy antiquities have failed in their frontal assault on the convent building, still depredations have been made.
