Description: Corvette 1962-LATE horn set. This set is an original 441/442 matched pair as installed on late 1962 production C1 Corvettes at the Flint Assembly Plant. Each horn offered in this listing has a stamped DELCO assembly date of "2 D 4". This DELCO assembly date is a key feature which confirms these horns as correct for 1962 Corvettes with car assembly dates after early April 1962. This set has been remanufactured by The Horn Works, Beloit, WI. An optional ONE YEAR REPLACEMENT/REFUND GUARANTEE is included and backed by the Seller at no additional cost. The horn set in this listing meets the National Corvette Restorers Society(NCRS) description of "original" 1962 Corvette 441/442 horns. These horns have been disassembled and cleaned, operating components restored/replaced and re-assembled with correct rivets and assembly techniques. A correct high quality black gloss finish was applied. This horn set has been tested and is ready for restoration projects where authentic "original" horns, as installed on the Corvette assembly line are required. This is a beautiful matched-date set. Buyer satisfaction is guaranteed, and no questions return accepted within 14 days. 441/442 DELCO HORN DESCRIPTION During the two years of 61/62 Corvette car production there were three slightly different versions of the 441/442 DELCO horns because of running DELCO changes (which are somewhat minor). However, Buyers should be aware that ALL 61/62 Corvette 441/442 horns have the following identical features in-common: a die cast main body with a riveted stamped steel rear-cover; cast or stamped markings which include "441", " 442", "12V" "MODEL" and "Delco, MADE IN USA, Remy". These features are shown in pictures of the actual horns offered and they match descriptions and pictures on page 95 of the NCRS 1961-62 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide. In addition to the above in-common features, ALL 61/62 Corvette horns have L shaped brackets spot welded to the horn. In contrast, replacement 441/442 horns issued by GM Parts had generic bolt-on horn brackets. The welded bracket is present ONLY on 441/442 horns which were originally installed on the Corvette factory assembly line. Bolt-on 441/442 horn brackets ARE NOT credited as "original" under NCRS judging standards. RUNNING HORN CHANGES MADE BY DELCO As noted above, during 61/62 Corvette production, there were running horn changes made by DELCO. First, in mid-61 DELCO revised the rear cover on both horns, and 2nd, in mid-62 DELCO began stamping a horn assembly date on each horn. The horn identifying numbers 441/442 remained the same with the result that 3 versions, almost identical but slightly different, were installed at various times on the 61/62 Corvette assembly line. Obviously, selection of the correct version for authentic restoration of 61/62 Corvettes requires an understanding of these DELCO running changes. 1961-Early: First version 441/442 horns installed on the car assembly line can be identified by rear horn covers with a simple flat outer flange. First version 441/442 horns WERE NOT DELCO stamped with a horn assembly date. 1961-Mid: Second version 441/442 horns installed on the car assembly line had rear covers with "reinforced ribs" on the outer flange between the rivets. These "ribs" were designed to provide strength to the outer flat flange. The Second version horns WERE NOT stamped with DELCO horn assembly dates. 1962-MID: Third version 441/442 horns installed on the car assembly line were produced WITH A DELCO HORN ASSEMBLY DATE on each horn. DELCO utilized a 3-digit code, YEAR-MONTH-WEEK of horn assembly. Also, the third version horns CONTINUED with "reinforcing ribs" as introduced on second version horns. SUMMARY There were three original versions of DELCO 441/442 horns as installed on the Corvette factory assembly line:First version: 61ESecond Version: 61L-62EThird Version: 62L Early 1961 Corvette first version 441/442 horns are easily identified because they are the only version 441/442 horns with smooth-flange rear horn bodies. Late-1961 Corvette production introduced "reinforced ribs" on the rear cover as a running improvement in design. The "ribbed" rear horn was then used on Corvettes until end of production in 1962. However, beginning in Late-62, DELCO began horn assembly date stamping. Thus 441/442 horns with an assembly date stamp can readily be identified as 62L. Due to assembly line parts-stocking and new-part transition issues at the St Louis assembly plant, it is remotely possible that an early version 441/442 horn could end up installed on the Corvette assembly line at a later time. However, the reverse is not true. A later version 441/442 horn installed on earlier production Corvettes is "not original" since the later version did not yet exis when earlier Corvettes were assembled. In this situation, NCRS would consider later version of the 441/442 horn as "replacement" because the DELCO horn assembly date is after the St Louis Assembly Date for the car. INSTALLATION NOTE TO RESTORERS The NCRS 1961-62 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide, P.95 states that GM instructions for horn installation in the Assembly Information Manual (AIM) is incorrect. Horn #441 (low note) is correctly installed on the driver/left side of the car, and Horn #442 high note) is correctly installed on the passenger/left side of the car. This is "contrary to the AIM" which is incorrect per NCRS research. SATISFACTION GUARANTEE This is a mint original refurbished DELCO HORN #441/442 set. Buyer satisfaction is guaranteed, and Seller's policy is that return for any reason will be accepted within 14 days. Buyer responsible for cost of return shipping. In addition, a 1 year replacement/refund guarantee of correct operation is included with this listing.
