It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Maryland's last virgin forest of towering white pine and hemlock, a 40 acre stand of somber woodland, grows on the rocky slopes of the Alleghenies in western Garrett County. Many of the giant trees are 275 years old. Some are over 300. This stand is part of the 9,000 acre Swallow Falls State Forest, and the area has been called the most beautiful in Maryland. A soft light filters through the high branches, transforming the forest of pine and hemlock into a hushed cathedral-like scene.Photo measures 7 x 9.25inches. Photo is dated 7-10-1961.
