Captain Joao Maria Paulo Varela Gomes, standing at right, was critically wounded today as he led a band of 40 armed civilians into barracks outside Beja, Portugal, in the first step toward what was to have developed into a national revolution. All 40 were killed, wounded or captured. This picture of the leader was made when he made an election speech last November when he was an oppsition candidate for the general assembly.
