Additional Information Patrice Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and remained an influential leader in the independence movement within Africa following years of colonial rule under European Governments. Lumumba was born in 1925. In the years following the conclusion of World War I, Lumumba was ideologically an African Nationalist and pan-Africanist, which led to his formation of the Congolese National Movement, which would play a considerable role in the transformation of the country to a free state instead of being ruled by Belgium. Shortly after Congolese independence was achieved in June of 1960, a military coup occurred, which ousted Lumumba from power and led to his eventual capture and execution. This photograph captures Lumumba speaking to his supporters as he attempted to retain control of the nation and regain power from the military leaders that had driven him out of power. Lumumba became a symbolic martyr for the pan-African movement, and his political ideology and influence have inspired countless activists and politicians across the globe as well as within Africa, which saw considerable moves for independence during the 1960s as colonial rule would eventually fall in nearly every nation on the continent. This is an iconic picture of Lumumba at a pivotal moment in his career, and the image immediately captures the spirit and ideas Lumumba espoused during his time leading up to Congolese independence. This photograph is an authentic piece of African political history that transports the viewer back in time.
