Description: Handsome large-format fold-out 1960 Esso Standard Italiana road map of Italy, printed more than 60 years ago. This map opens to a generous 24" x 34" and the cartography is by the General Drafting Company. There are inset plans of Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Naples, Sardinia, and Florence, as well as an attractive pictorial map of the lakes of northern Italy. This map was published in 1960 and is dated in the legend. Happy, Esso's cheery Oil Drop Man, originally created by Danish artist Vilhelm Hansen, proclaims "Sempre al vostro servicio." (Always at your service.) Condition: This map is in good, used condition, with route markings by Esso's Touring Service. The paper has softened and there's wear at the edges and on the folds. A previous owner has made a few notes on the map and in the margins to articles in Autocar magazine on the 1961 road rally, a short-lived variation on the Mille Miglia, an open-road, motorsport endurance race first run in 1927.
