1959 Fender Jazzmaster Vintage Pre-CBS Offset Guitar Olympic White w/ Case

Description: Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Hailing from the first full year of the Jazzmaster's production, this guitar was long ago refinished in a gloss Olympic White, retaining all original hardware, plastics, and the black bobbin pickup pair. Acoustically this guitar has an immediate and dynamic quality that is channeled faithfully through the original pickup pair, with the neck pickup reading a robust 8.5k ohms, while the bridge pickup compliments it well and measures 8.1k. Wound to the furthest edges of the wide/flat black fiber bobbins, this guitar offers a distinct, vital sound in every pickup position. There's a bold, chewy cut and sweetness in the neck position, and a sparkling snap with upper midrange presence at the bridge, while engaging both pickups together yields a woody, percussive quality. The guitar weighs 7lbs 14oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar (where we specialize in Fender Offset instruments) with low action and fresh 11-49 strings. The maple neck has a profile carve very representative of the 1959 model year, with a very slender C shape at the nut and appreciable roundness and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, with lightly rolled fretboard edges in every register. The profile measures .745" deep at the 1st fret and .955" at the 12th. The slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this tonewood with dynamic grain, retaining the original 7 1/4" fretboard radius and refretted with slender fretwire that shows no wear, playing cleanly in every register. The neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod, and the truss rod nut is flush with the neck heel, having needed very little adjustment in the last 60+ years. A new hand-carved bone nut measures 1.660" wide (a perfect middle ground between 1 5/8" and 1 11/16"), improving the tonal clarity of the instrument. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners are intact and function as intended, and while the High E tuner is missing one piece at the top of its post, it still functions as intended. The neck profile and headstock were refinished in nitro lacquer with a smooth satin feel, and a new proper waterslide decal with no patent #s beneath the Jazzmaster model text has been applied as well. As with the vast majority of Fenders made in 1959, there is no date on the neck heel. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots in the Lead Circuit that date to mid-1959 (26th week on the Volume pot). The harness features some new cloth-covered wiring, with new pots and a premium paper-in-oil capacitor in the Rhythm Circuit. The bridge pickup retains its original windings, and the neck pickup has been rewound to spec with the correct black wax potting, also sporting new leads. The body routes are untouched, and all of the stock brass shielding tubs are present. All of the original hardware is intact, and the stock bridge with threaded saddles sits firmly in the deep bridge thimbles, working in concert with the patent pending vibrato tailpiece. The chrome plating on the hardware is notably clean, and the vibrato has an elegant response with a taut original spring that offers very exact and delicate warbles and deeper dives. A new vibrato arm is present, fitting in the original arm collet. All original plastics include pickup covers and knobs that show minimal aging, and the original tortoise pickguard with some of the usual warpage and modest shrinkage common with this material, exposing a sliver of the shielding plate beneath the guard. The older Olympic White gloss body refinish was professionally applied, with all body contours faithfully retained. Cosmetic wear is limited to a couple dings and small finish chips on the lower bout body edge, a spot of light buckle rash central to the back, and just a few additional faint finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. A modern Fender G&G Deluxe brown tolex hardshell case is included.
