Description: This '56 GMC step side was built before Chevrolet and GMC were the same truck. The GMC was a somewhat heavier duty truck than the Chevrolet. When this truck was new only Pontiac, Olds, Buick and Cadillac dealers could sell a GMC. The trucks looked similar but that is all, engine, trans, interior, grille and hoods were different. This truck left the factory with a 317 CID Pontiac engine and a Hydra-Matic trans. This ole truck was really in very nice condition before the restoration began. The last photo in the group I uploaded is the truck prior to restoration. Of course we started out by disassembling the truck, engine, trans came out, the frame was cut below the firewall and the new frame from TCI was welded in. Power steering, power disc brakes, coil over shocks were all added. Classic AC was added along with the serpentine belt system was added along with a pair of electric cooling fans. The engine I used was a 455 CID Pontiac with a 400 turbo tranny. I sent the engine and tranny to Jasper Engines in Indiana and had both rebuilt. A Ram Air camshaft was used along with Pontiac factory cast iron headers, they do make wonderful sounding horsepower. Inside a tilt wheel replaced the old column and a floor shift was used. All new gage package from AutoMeter replaced the factory cluster. Bucket seats replaced the factory seat with the drivers seat being power. The exterior of the truck was in really good shape with the exception of the rear fenders and the tailgate which were replace. Of course the body was stripped and minor body work was performed. Epoxy primer was used and sealed with sealer prior to paint. Paint was base coat clear coat, color is Sebring Silver that came on '63 Corvettes, that was a firemist paint that GM used on Cadillac's. The wheels used look very much akin to the wheels on a Pontiac of the late 70s and early 80s, they definitely look like they belong on that truck. Of course the red line tires really do "pop". This truck drives like a late model, it cruises at 75, a real treat to drive.
