Description: Very Rare Find. A Flannel game worn jersey worn by Dave Philley for the 1954 World Series bound Cleveland Indians. This jersey was passed down to the minor leagues and or beyond that as I do not know which Cardinals these would be. There is a satin-y fabric Cardinals patch sewn over the original jersey. The tell tale signs that this is in fact an original are. The original felt double layer 17 is on the back, Philley chain stitch nameplate at the back of the neck, and the chain stitched year below with appropriate Wilson tagging. 1954 Size 44. The sleeve has an outline where the Chief Wahoo patch was sewn, and you can see the Indians outline on the chest as well. There are small iron-on patches on the inside to keep the integrity of the jersey together as this may have been passed down many times. I have not restored this yet, giving another buyer a shot at this before I send it off myself. I may ask Bill Henderson who can do both the restoration and authentication. Impossible find, I could not find another example online for sale or auction, mlbcollectors.com has images of Cleveland Indians jerseys to compare. Unsure if this would have been worn during the World Series or just a regular season issue. Dave Philley joined the Indians in the 1954, an above average hitter, speedy in the outfield. He enjoyed 18 years in the big leagues I’m including this physical press photo of Dave Philley, his back turned with the original #17 on his back. This is image is from 9/2/1954. The 17 does match up to where the numbers should be vertically and the felt sew lines look very similar. A possible photo match.
