Here Bill Vuckovich sits on the work bench in his garage at gasoline alley, exhausted after winning the 1953 Indy 500. Notice the Mobil Oil cans below bench. This is Bill Jr's favorite picture of his Dad. The temperature was in the 90s and nearly every driver in the race needed relief.One car had 7 drivers in it during the course of the race.I've seen films of Tony Bettenhausen as he was pulled out of his car,and he looked nearly unconscious. From what I've read,Scarborough came in and was replaced in the car and while in the pits he collapsed.One of the few who made it without relief was Bill Vukovich who ran away with the race,leading 195 laps.His famous comment was,"You think this is hot?You ought to drive a tractor in Fresno in July!" Even under ideal conditions the cars at that time really beat up the drivers.They were terribly difficult to drive,they had no power steering and cockpit temperatures often reached 150 degrees.The front straight was still paved with bricks which pounded the drivers and even caution periods offered little relief because they didn't put out the pace car and bunch up the field.They merely slowed a little and held position.They didn't stop very often either.I think Vukovich made only two pit stops.
