Nichiren (1222-1282), was a Japanese Buddhist priest and philosopher of the Kamakura period. His teachings form the basis of Nichiren Buddhism, a Branch of Mahayana Buddhism. He declared that the Lotus Sutra alone contains the highest truth of Buddhist teachings suited for the third age of Buddhism, insisting that Japan and its people should support only this form of Buddhism and eradicate all others. He was the priest who established the form of Buddhism embraced by members of the Soka Gakkai. He had deep concern for the welfare of ordinary people, which made him an unrelenting opponent to the often turbulent and oppressive social structures of his time. He dedicated his life to propagating a teaching that could liberate people from their sufferings and create the conditions for a society based on respect for the fundamental dignity and equality of all people. This specific book once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages". Rahder's blue-inked Yale University faculty stamp and pen markings can be found throughout this folio. FORN-SHELF-0754-BB-0524-eb0710
