Description: If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a damn if she's late? Nobody. Here we offer the first retail edition, stated fourth print, of the classic American novel, J.D. Salinger's Catcher In the Rye, published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, in 1951. The book comes wrapped in the highest quality facsimile of the first edition dust jacket featuring a book-high photo of the famously reclusive author on the back, which was thereafter removed, as per Salinger's demand. The dust jacket can be identified as a first retail jacket in that there is only one Book of the Month Club mention on the flaps (BOMC copies had four. BOMC designation was made PRIOR to the retail release, and so was advertised as a feature on the retail foldover.) The jacket is printed on coated heavyweight bond; the polymer coating on the paper ensures the brightest colors and sharpest prints, as the ink sits atop the paper rather than being absorbed into the fibers. Also included are modern reprinted copies of S.N. Behrman's August 11, 1951 review of Catcher in the Rye for the New Yorker Magazine and Harrison Smith's July 14, 1951 review for Saturday Review.Boards are smudged and the titles have faded, which is typical for early retail Catchers (please see pics). Intact endpages bear a neat period inscription. Very tight and square binding; very bright and crisp text with a few fingerprints. Dust jacket comes secured in an acid-free mylar sleeve and ready to slip into your collection. 277 pages. The book measures approximately 8 x 5.5-inches. This classic first will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very thoughtful gift. The American Library Association lists this title among its 100 most banned books.
