Description: Stunning Arbol de la Vida ~ Tree of Life candelabra. This piece dates from the 1950s in the traditional Garden of Eden theme. Adam and Eve safely covered by their fig leaves. Eve holding the apple. In the center winding up the tree is the serpent leering at Eve. White peace doves fly around the center and top. Attributed to maker Modesta Mata -- one of the earliest artisans making these trees. These traditional pieces are all hand built and take anywhere from weeks to years to create (depending on the size and details, of course). Three candle holders. This is a lovely example of the traditional folk art. Natural terra cotta color clay base with traditional translucent glazes like creams, yellows, greens, with navy blue on the flowers thrown in for fun contrast. The most dramatic detail is the many many leaves and flowers and spheres that are molded on heavy wire and are free-flying off the candelabra base sculpture. This makes a lively scene. Overlaid on the whole piece is a shiny protective glaze. Still attached is the pasted-on brown paper label printed with an outline of open hands and "0503 ETPT $100.00 MEXICO". Stands a tall 13" x 15" across. In remarkably good condition. No chips or cracks. Some glaze mistakes in the making. The only damage I found is 2 leaves where the wire has chipped out the clay in front of it (see last photo). Will be carefully (lovingly) shipped insured for safe arrival. 1950s Mexican Tree of Life ~ Garden of Eden Folk Art Pottery Candelabra Click images to enlarge Description Stunning Arbol de la Vida ~ Tree of Life candelabra.
