Korea had been ruled by the Japanese from 1910-1945. Following the end the World War II, the victorious Allies divided Korea, under an agreement made at the Potsdam Conference; this division was made without consulting first with the Koreans. US and USSR armies occupied portions of Korea until 1949, when both nations withdrew and the respective armies of North Korea and South Korea assumed responsibility for their own defense. North Korea had established a Communist regime, while South Korea was a democratic state and openly prosecuted Communists and their sympathizers. North Korea, unhappy with this situation, solicited and gained the support of both China and the USSR, both of which armed the North Koreans; it attacked South Korea with no notice in a surprise foray on June 25th. North Korea penetrated deep into South Korea, before armies of the United Nations, led by the US, began the repulse and drove the North Koreans back into their original territory. China then sent troops to reinforce the North Korean military. For auction is a booklet entitled "The Korean War, The Chinese Intervention, 3 November 1950 - 24 January 1951".
