Description: This is for an original program from the December 16-17 N.A.I.B. (National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Official Program) Double Header Series which was played at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City Missouri. The NAIB was established in 1940 along with a tournament by Dr James Naismith and others to have a forum for smaller colleges and universities to help determine a national basketball champion. In 1948, the NAIB would be the first national organization to allow African American student athletes to participate in post season games. Clarence Walker, from coach John Wooden’s Indiana State Teachers College would be the first African American to appear in any post season basketball tournament. As stated in the “Welcome” of the program, this doubleheader tournament was established by the NAIB so they could play sectional and intersectional games with the hope of one day making it to college basketball’s biggest show at the time, the National Invitational Tournament which was also held in Kansas City. All of the games in this program have been scored lightly in pencil, and also features photos of the participating teams. The spine is split a bit at the bottom and there is a rust stain on the word “Series” on the cover, but this is probably the only program you’ll ever find from the NAIB League as in 1952 they would become the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and would sponsor many other sports than just basketball. An extremely rare piece of early college basketball history. Check out the scans and email with any questions.
