Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt smiles radiantly as she is escorted through the Metropolitan Opera lobby by Carleton Smith, distinguished business consultant and the new director of the National Arts Foundation. In Mrs. Vanderbilt's party was Mrs. Stanley F. Reed, wife of the Associate Justice of The Supreme Court (shown smiling over Mrs. Vanderbilt's shoulder) (and Kenneth De Courcy, English political analyst). This is Mrs. Vanderbilt's first appearance since 1945 at the opening of the grand opera season. Mr. Smith is carrying the box of cigars Mrs. Vanderbilt brought with her to present to the collection of cigars for Sibelius, Finnish composer, at the opening night of the opera. Mrs. Vanderbilt and Mr. Smith head the foundation committee which will sponsor the visit of the world famous Glyndebourne Opera to Princeton, New Jersey, next fall. The national arts foundation is a philanthropic organization to encourage interest in the arts he3e and make exchanges of art and artists with foreign countries.
