The guardian angel who watches over wayfaring critics fixed it so the Metropolitan Opera's most exciting performance in years occurred while I was here. With the collaboration of the Met's manager, blithe and euphuistic Francis Robinson, she got me in on the notable debut of soprano Lubin Welitsch and conductor Fritz Reiner in "Salome." This, as you know, is Richard Strauss' seething story of a eager Judean lass who failed to captivate John the Baptist and had to be satisfied, finally, with nothing but his head.She taunts and makes love to the headless head, a situation plainly indicating that Salome's case was too late for psychoanalysis and warranted more drastic treatment, to wit, a quick execution at the hands of Roman soldiers.Before that happened, however, we were treated to the most volcanic performance of visualized music I've witnessed in years.Reiner's conducting, stern and always cool-headed, maintained a constant tension and built great climaxes of abandom and fury.
