Three phases of General Marshall's life - General George Catlett Marshall whom President Truman on January 7 selected to succeed James F. Byrnes as Secretary of State, effective January 10, is depicted in three phases of his life. Picture top left, the new chief of our State Department sits upright in a chair as a young child. Lower left, the former Army chief of staff (upper right), poses with Virginia Military Institute class members. He was graduated from VMI in 1901. In the picture at right, Lt. Marshall, (Standing right), and Captain George E. Thorne (Standing left), study charts, as Captain Matthew E. Hanna and Major General Fred Grant, (Both Seated), discuss a field problem during maneuvers near Andover, MA, in 1910. Chief of staff during World War II, General Marshall was appointed special envoy to China on November 27, 1945, after US Ambassador Major General Patrick J.
