Navy studies effect of weather on high-frequency radio transmissions -- Seeking to extend the range of ultra-short-wave radio, radar and television to 2,000 miles, scientists of the Navy Electronics Laboratory of San Diego, California, are studying the effect of weather changes on high frequency radio transmissions in experiments being conducted at an abandoned Army air base in the desert at Gila Bend, Arizona. The possible application of high frequency radio transmissions to the science of weather forecasting also is being studied as a corollary to the main experiments. It is hoped that eventually the right frequency for each particular weather condition will be found. The range of ultra-short-wave transmissions are now generally limited to the optical horizon, or at best to 150 miles. Weather recording instruments on the elevator of the Gila Bend tower are used to keep a continuous record of weather conditions during the radio transmissions.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches.
