Ships, Enterprise, U.S.S. Carriers receive awards - Thirteen combat aircraft carriers today received unit citations or commendations in the largest mass award of World War II. Presidential Unit Citations went to eight of the carriers while the remaining five got the Navy Unit Commendation. All of the ships served in the Pacific. Men who served on the carriers or who were attached to their air groups during the designated periods are authorized to wear the ribbons of the respective awards. The USS Essex, here shown recovering aircraft during a Pacific engagement has been awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for inflicting "terrific loss on the Japanese in fleet and merchant units sunk or damaged."Photo measures 10.25 x 8.25inches.
