This is a collection of essays by George Orwell which was published the year after his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy's death. These essays are predominantly wartime pieces that cover a variety of topics, including popular culture as well as literature. Contents include 'Charles Dickens', 'Boys' Weeklies', 'Benefit of Clergy: Some Notes on Salvador Dali', and 'Wells, Hitler and the World State', which was a response to H. G. Wells' 'Guide to the New World'. This work was considered by the author himself to be one of his most important works. George Orwell (1903-1950), also known as Eric Arthur Blair, was an English novelist, essayist, and journalist. He is best known for works such as 'Animal Farm' as well as 'Nineteen Eighty-Four', with his many novels remaining influential within popular and political culture. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear of text. Prior owner's ink inscription to front paste down, belonging to Jay Hayward and dated 1946.Collated, complete. CONDITION In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping to the spine with a few marks to boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with minimal edge wear and chipping to the spine region, with age-toning and spots to both sides of wraps. Clean tear along spine has results in front wrap fully detaching from spine. Because of this, the dust wrapper is presented in a mylar brodart. Spotting to text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot along the fore edge.
