Undated, it was issued in 1944 during the year Luxembourg was liberated from the Germans by United States troops. Germany invaded and occupied Luxembourg on May 10, 1940. The US “5th Armored Division” began the liberation on September 10, 1944. Despite the fact that Luxembourg is slightly smaller than Rhode Island, it took a while to free the country because of the famous “Battle of the Bulge” that took place partially in Luxembourg and ended in late January of 1945. During World War II, Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg went into exile following the German invasion of Luxembourg in May of 1940. She first moved to France, then Portugal, Great Britain, and finally settled in Montreal. While in exile, she made broadcasts to the people of Luxembourg. She returned to Luxembourg in April of 1945.
