Bastille Day in Cherbourg, 1944: The mayor of Cherbourg, Mr. Paul Renault, inaugurated the "Place du General de Gaulle" on July 14, 1944. The name of the square had been "Place du Chateau," then "Place du Marechal Petain," and finally a short while before the liberation, Cherbourg citizens called it simply "the market-place." The only decoration for this ceremony was a Tricolor draped with white silk from the parachutes of those who were the advance guard for the liberators of France. Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches.
