Montgomery gins Mississippi Sea Island cotton Research Modernized Cotton Ginning --- Textile mills accept only well-ginned cotton for filling the orders of our fighting forces. U.S. Army and Navy specification call for the highest quality cotton and the mills have neither time not labor to rework poorly-ginned cotton. -- Research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has developed equipment and operating procedure that give better ginning, at a reasonable cost, than those formerly in general use. This research, designed to find ways for keeping cotton fiber as good as it was at its best in the field where it grew, was begun 13 years ago in a laboratory built for the purpose at Stoneville, Mississippi. As research results have become available, they have been put into practice in many cotton gins. -- Investigation now is progress at Stoneville, some of which are shown here, are directed toward the solution of ginning problems that arise from the varying conditions in the industry. For example, gins vary in size, cottons vary greatly in quality and in length of fiber, and atmospheric conditions vary throughout the Cotton Belt. The type of ginning equipment and the procedure to be followed at each gin depend on these conditions. --- Henry T. Montgomery gins Mississippi Sea Island cotton in a modern type roller gin.
