Unfortunately, he died before he could finish his work, and this volume includes only the first paragraph as its introduction, to what would have been a longer work planned as part of the main fabric of English literature. Nonetheless it remains a thorough and interesting insight. Containing 'The Battle of Maldon,' 'Judith,' 'The Fates and Gifts of Men,' 'Gnomic Verses,' and many more. CONDITION In the original publisher's white paper covered boards. Externally excellent with only minor shelfwear. Minor faint spotting to front and rear board, as usual due to the type of paper used. Inscribed by Gertrude Bone to half title page "To Oswald B powell with best wishes for 1944 from Muirhead and Gertrude Bone." Internally, firmly bound. Minor faint spotting to fore edge, affecting only the endpapers, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with frontispiece.
