Description: 1940's Superman Vintage Vinegar or Comic Valentine Scarce Item Description: 1940's Vinegar or Comic Valentine titled: Superman: Your Body sure is Muscle Bound and so's Your Brain poor guy! I didn't know A Tub Of Lard could be Piled Up That High! Printed in USA. 7.75 x 10.75 inches. Fair.Crudely printed on cheap pulp paper comic or vinegar valentines were introduced in 1858 by New York City printer and publisher John McLaughlin. The designs featured caricatures of people along with sarcastic verses, frequently vulgar and often vicious. In 1870 American cartoonist Charles Howard introduced similar comic designs called Penny Dreadfuls, because they sold for a penny. Since vinegar valentines were printed on poor quality pulp paper and offensive in nature they were often destroyed.
