Description: 1940s Otagiri Soma Ware Somayaki Mid-Century Japanese Tea Cup Set 6 Pieces VTG These ceramic hand crafted tea cups have a beautiful sage green crackle (aohibi) glaze, with brown bases, and rimmed with gold. The cups are double walled, with carved out hearts outlined in gold on the outer layer, with the galloping horse (hashiri-uma) motif inside at the bottom of the cup. This horse motif is said to have been requested by a feudal lord in the mid-1600's to show pride in the region's ability to breed and train quality horses. The double wall design, distinctive to Somayaki pottery, holds the tea inside the cup hot, while the outside stays cool to the touch. The pieces have a Raku glaze in a celadon green on the interior and on the exterior upper portion, with a dark olive green around the lower outer portion of the pottery. These Soma ware cups are slightly irregular in size, but they measure on average 3.25" tall and 3.25" in diameter at top rim. They are in excellent vintage condition, with only some very minor wear to the gold rim of the cups. No chips or cracks. These rustic cups have such character and charm and would be wonderful displayed when not enjoyed for afternoon tea time. Great condition, with minimal to no signs of use.
