1940 1st DJ SO YOU'RE GOING SOUTH Guidebook North Carolina SC Georgia Florida VA

Description: Title: So You're Going South! To The South Atlantic States And If I Were Going With You These Are Some Of The Places I'd Suggest Author: Clara E. Laughlin Publisher: Little, Brown & Co. (1940) (see the other scarce guide to the south from 1941 that is also up for auction by clicking on see other items) Description:The story and guide to what is now a vanished south. Covering Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. This is another scarce guidebook (we have another up for auction right now) to the southern states of the Atlantic Coast of the United States written on the brink of World War II, when it was still possible to travel before gas rationing and the our entry into the war would forever change what was possible in terms of touring. Written by an expert travel writer, Clara Laughlin who wrote several travel books like this. Illustrated with a couple of dozen photographs. Very difficult to find a first edition in a nice dust jacket. From the Book's dj flapThe author of “So You’re Seeing New England!’ and all the famous “So You're Going” guides to Europe now turns her very special talents to Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. No one but Miss Laughlin could have written this book. With it as a companion and guide, a trip through the South takes on all the excitement of a jaunt through the chateau country or the Cotswolds. For she knows unerringly what appeals to travelers of every taste. Here is history, in tempting, colorful bits about the battles and great men, stately houses and ancient towns— Charleston, Williamsburg, Savannah— whose heritage is the pride of theSouth. Here is information about roads and sports, storied inns and enchanted gardens—all woven into a text that reads like the conversation of the best of traveling companions. For the traveler, or those who can only travel by book—as well as for the Southerner who wants to rediscover the South—Miss Laughlin’s book is a rare delight. From the IntroductionINTRODUCING THIS BOOKAlthough millions of people annually visit the South Atlantic states, with their great wealth of tourist interests, there has never been a book written for such travelers. Books about Virginia are fairly numerous; about the Carolinas, much less so; about Georgia, still fewer. Florida, which has so great a story to tell, to her throngs of visitors and winter residents, has not had it told until within the past couple of years. Never has there been in one volume anything that might serve as a guide to these five states. The purpose of this book is to give the intending traveler to those states as much information of as many sorts as can be crowded into one small, pocket-size volume and to indicate where he may find a great deal mere on any place or subject that especially interests him. The book is based on motor travel, because that is the way most people go to these states, and also because it is the way that needs more directing than any other. But I hope it may equally serve those who go by train or by bus, and the very considerable number who go by plane; also, those who use the pleasant approaches by sea, along our storied coasts. Four of these states were of the original Thirteen (Florida did not become a state till 1845), and in them were many of the beginnings of our history which are of moment to us today as never before. This book has our history much in mind, but is no less concerned with our immediate present and with the outlook for our future. In it you will find many reflections of the great men who gave us our independence and our government, and of those who fought on both sides in the War between the States; but also, you will find much about industry and agriculture and education in the New South, and a great deal about sports, and scenic beauties, and accommodations for visitors; about sights to see, and varied entertainments, and about food, and health resorts, and places to shop; also much about the schools which attract many pupils from afar. Terms (payment, shipping, tax, returns, feedback, etc.) Please read before buying U.S. bidders only Payment Please pay within 48 hours of winning. eBay managed payments Shipping Shipping will be $6.50 and will be shipped USPS media mail with tracking. We may upgrade your package at our discretion to USPS Ground Advantage. Package will be shipped within 4 business days after payment - usually faster. The USPS can be notoriously slow, it could take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please take that into account when leaving feedback, that we will ship quickly, but the USPS can take a long time to deliver, and we have no control over delivery time. Why Shipping Costs Are What They Are: eBay users may note that postal rates increased AGAIN on July 14, 2024. That's EIGHT price hikes in 4 years. This was the largest single price increase ever: 10% on media mail. USPS shipping is getting expensive, but eBay also charges sellers 15% on the shipping cost (+ the taxes), in addition to the actual package shipping cost. That fact and the USPS business model has made shipping prices rise quite a bit since 2019. In 2019 a one pound package sent via media mail cost $2.75. Today it is 68% more to send the same package. This is all part of the bi-annual price increases starting in 2020 & the misguided USPS 10 Year Plan - “Delivering For America,” implemented in 2021 which twice per year, every year until 2030 will keep increasing rates, while the USPS continues to lose billions of dollars. Combined Shipping if you Buy or Win Multiple Auctions Multiple book/media auction wins will qualify for combined shipping when possible. Do not pay until auctions you are bidding on are complete. Email to let us know that you will be bidding or have won more than one item. A revised combined invoice will then be sent after you tell us you are done bidding. Otherwise, if you pay before all auctions are complete or pay separately - combined shipping is not available. Sales Tax: If your state has sales tax, it is collected by eBay & then paid to your state tax authority. Sellers do not make money from this but are charged a percentage by eBay on the total sale including tax – insane, but true. Returns No returns. We describe all items conservatively. However, If there is a problem, message us through eBay messages to let us know what the issue is before contacting eBay or initiating a return or leaving feedback and we will work it out. We want satisfied customers. Feedback: After you receive your item and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback and after you do we will reciprocate. Questions There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Please ask any and all questions before bidding. Photos & Descriptions Photos are of the actual item depicted and are part of the description, please view them all. No stock photos, as many other “bulk sellers” listings are used, which doesn’t show the real item you will be receiving. Descriptions are carefully written and detailed so you know exactly what you are bidding on. We reserve copyright to all our own descriptions & photos. About In the used and rare book business for over 35 years and on eBay for over 25 years.
