Description: 1939 Goudey Premiums R303-B, Al Simmons - MLB Hall of Fame - SGC 4 On the Player - Al Simmons (1902-1956), born Aloys Szymanski, was one of baseball's premier hitters during the 1920s and 1930s. His playing time included stints with the Philadelphia Athletics (1924–1932; 1940-1941; 1944), Chicago White Sox (1933–1935), Detroit Tigers (1936), Washington Senators (1937–1938), Boston Bees (1939), Cincinnati Reds (1939) and Boston Red Sox (1943). Known for his strong bat and intense competitive spirit, Simmons played primarily as an outfielder. He made his Major League Baseball debut with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1924, under legendary manager Connie Mack. Simmons was known for his distinctive batting stance, where he crouched low, allowing him to generate powerful line drives. A right-handed hitter, he excelled in clutch situations, earning a lifetime batting average of .334. Over his 20-year career, he amassed over 2,900 hits, 1,827 RBIs, and 307 home runs. He won two American League batting titles (1930, 1931) and was a key player on the Athletics' teams that won the World Series in 1929 and 1930. Simmons was a consistent force at the plate, achieving eleven .300+ seasons and driving in 100 or more runs in eleven different seasons. His defensive abilities in the outfield were also highly regarded, making him one of the most complete players of his era. Al Simmons was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. On the 1939 Goudey Premiums Set - In 1919, the Goudey Gum Company, founded by Enos Gordon Goudey, opened its first factory in Boston, Massachusetts. By 1933, Goudey revolutionized gum advertising by including baseball cards with each stick of gum, a first for the industry. While baseball cards had previously been included with cigarettes, tobacco, and some candy products, they had never been paired with gum, nor sold at an affordable price for children—a penny for both a card and a stick of gum. The 1933 Goudey "Big League Chewing Gum" set is now considered one of the "Big Three" classic baseball card sets, alongside the 1909-1911 T206 tobacco set and the 1952 Topps set. Goudey continued to produce baseball cards until 1941, when they issued their final set. The last major set from Goudey, the 1939 Goudey Premiums R303B baseball card set, consists of 24 cards, each measuring a large 4-3/4” by 7-5/16”. Printed on paper, these unnumbered cards feature player photos extending almost to the edge, along with a facsimile signature. The fronts are printed in black-and-white or sepia, while the backs, printed in brown, offer "How to" instructions (like "How to Run Bases" or "How to Bunt") and display the Diamond Stars Gum name. This set is often confused with the 1939 Goudey Premium R303A series, as both use identical imagery, but the R303B set is slightly larger in size.
