Description: Description: This fantastic program for the game against the Fordham Rams features the very respectable 6-2 football team from St. Mary’s where 36 players signed in the photo section in vintage period fountain pen. The Athletic Director And Coaches page is signed in pencil by St. Mary’s Athletic Director, Head Coach, and future College Football Hall of Fame Member Edward P. Madigan (signed E.P. Slip Madigan) as well as by Pat Frayne, sports editor of the San Francisco Call-Bulletin newspaper. The St. Mary’s Gaels, huge underdogs, defeated the heavily favored and previously undefeated 10-0 Texas Tech Red Raiders by a score of 20-13 in the 1939 Cotton Bowl. Although largely forgotten today, at the time it was considered one of the biggest upsets in the history of college football. The 1939 Cotton Bowl was the first post-season game for St. Mary’s and the only bowl game they ever won.
