Sails To Fugitive Husband: New York: Mrs. Grover Cleveland Bergdoll and three of her five children are shown sailing on the liner Hamburg last night to visit her husband and parents at Weinsberg, Germany. Mr. Bergdoll has been a fugitive since 1920 when he escaped from military guards after being sentenced to five years imprisonment for draft-dodging during the World War. Mrs. Bergdoll says she will return to the United States as soon as she can arrange for a permanent Visa (she is not a citizen) and will try to prevail upon her husband to return to United States and thrust himself upon executive mercy. The children are (left to right) Alfred, 11; Emma, 10, and Mina, 9. Another child, Dega, 3, is staying with relatives in Philadelphia.Photo measures 8.5 x 6.5inches. Photo is dated 12-07-1938.
