The image shows a model of the multi-level, multi-lane design, which includes lanes for both light and heavy traffic, along with interurban rail service. The location is set between Chicago, Illinois, and a point in Indiana, dated May 18, 1937.The concept presented in this photograph was designed by private citizens Paul Mandeville and Raymond Haag, who were dedicated to exploring improved use of the Chicago area's infrastructure. During the 1930s, visionary projects like this captured public imagination, although many remained unrealized due to the financial and logistical challenges of the era.Text present on photo:FROM WIDE WORLD PHOTOS PLEASE USE CREDIT. PROPOSE SUPER HIGHWAY ACROSS LAKE MICHIGAN. CHICAGO, ILL.--Plans for a "super-super" highway across the lower end of Lake Michigan to provide a fast traffic route from Chicago to the East were exhibited here today. The highway, plans for which call for an island midway between the Chicago terminal and a point in Indiana, would include a six-lane upper deck for light traffic and a four-lane lower deck for heavy traffic and interurban service. The exhibit and design is projected by three private citizens, Paul Mandeville, Raymond Haag, who profess that they have devoted years to a study of the "better use of our environs." Photos show the plan of the Illinois-Indiana overlake highway and a cutaway view of the trafficway. 5/18/37 CHICAGO BUREAU SERV. NY, 3,4,5,6 and directs.
