He was born on August 7, 1910 in Papeete, French Polynesia, and died on January 1, 1944 in Los Angeles, USA.Auguste Teriimana Joseph Goupil, known as "Augie Goupil", was born onAugust 7, 1910in Papeete in Polynesia . He is the grandson of Auguste Goupil (1847-1921), general advisor of the French Establishments of Oceania until 1903 1 , and the son of Albert Goupil (1876-1913), one of the founders in 1908 of the Compagnie Française des Phosphates de l’Océanie, intended for the exploitation of the Makatea 2 deposit . Augie Goupil is also the nephew of Jeanne Goupil (1887-1943), of whom Paul Gauguin painted a famous portrait in 1896 3 . His father and mother had five children: his sister Marcelle (1904), married Robert Quinn, an American from San Francisco , who in 1933 created Quinn's, a legendary nightclub in Papeete 4 , 5 ; his brother Paul (1912-1965) became a musician like him.InJuly 1919, Augie Goupil comes to settle with his mother, his three brothers and his sister in Berkeley , California . He attended St Joseph's Academy boarding school. He returned to his native island of Tahiti to finish his studies. A talented singer , composer and dancer , he is convinced that the verve and rhythm of Tahiti will be appreciated in America , at a time when the country is discovering its maritime facade on the Pacific and where the craze for " tiki culture " just started. In 1929, he joined forces with his sister Marcelle and his brother Paul and all three embarked as singer, dancer and musician on cruise ships that crisscrossed the Pacific . They worked in particular for the Matson Navigation Company , whose luxury liners operated between San Francisco and Honolulu . From 1929, Augie Goupil's career was punctuated by his boardings on liners , by his concerts in San Francisco and, in particular, after 1933, by his performances at Robert Quinn's tiki bar, the Tahitian Hut, where Hawaiian singer Sol K. Bright Sr. is said to have composed his biggest hit, "Hawaiian Cowboy" 6 , 7 . The rapid success that Augie Goupil experienced in his performances in San Francisco demonstrated that his intuition was justified and that the American public was there for this type of music. In the mid-1930s he moved to Hollywood . He quickly became friends with Hawaiian musicians who lived in the region and performed in Los Angeles clubs or in films shot in Hollywood and with whom he founded his group Augie Goupil and His Royal Tahitians , in which his brother Paul participated. An excellent singer , percussionist and dancer , he recorded his first compositions at Decca Records in Los Angeles in 1936. In 1937, he even worked with Hollywood studios on films with "tropical" connotations, such as Love in Waikiki 6 . He produces colorful and catchy songs, perfectly in tune with the times. In addition to his talent, the key to his success undoubtedly lies in his ability to combine a Tahitian sound, which is new to American ears , with the professionalism of his Hawaiian musicians . He died at the height of his career onJanuary 1 , 1944, following spinal tuberculosis . He is buried in Santa Monica 's Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery .Despite a relatively short period of activity, Augie Goupil was very prolific, since he wrote and performed around forty songs in Tahitian or English , songs that were often light and very rhythmic or sometimes romantic and languorous. Among the best known, there is "Papio", a very popular song of the time, which he performed in 1936, after having been sung in 1934 by the group Sol K. Bright Sr.'s Hollywaiians (en) , and which is covered by many Tahitian groups or singers , such as Tamarii Tahiti or Charley Mauu ; there is also "Tahiti O Tera", sometimes subtitled "Les Femmes d'Amérique", written in 1937 and which is a great classic of Polynesian music , or even, in a more Hawaiian style , the song "My Tane ", written in 1941 and sung by Ray Kinney and Bing Crosby . Until the early 1960s, Paul Goupil, who took over the group under the name Paul Goupil and His Royal Tahitians , continued to sing his brother's repertoire as well as the classics of Tahitian and Hawaiian song . The band tours at the Tahitian Hut bar and the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco , among other places .In 2017, the show Tahiti 1917 , which traces the careers of some pioneers of Polynesian music such as George Tautu Archer , Bimbo , Augie Goupil and others through film extracts and songs, was presented for the first time at the public from Tahiti to Papeete 8 .Filmography Augie Goupil appeared as an extra as a dancer in two films, Frank Tuttle 's Love in Waikiki in 1937, with Bing Crosby in the lead role, and Albert S. Rogell 's Hawaiian Nights in 1939, with Constance Moore and Johnny Downs in the lead roles. He also arranged with Leroy Prinz the dance scenes for the film Love in Waikiki , selected for the Oscar for best choreography in 1938.
