Chicago has $15,000,000 blaze -- worst since 1871. The greatest conflagration since the one that razed the city in 1871, spread through the Union Stockyards section of this Midwest metropolis tonight (May 19), costing the lives of at least 10 persons, and injuring 35 or more firemen, and destroying at least $15,000,000 in property and livestock. A southwest wind whipped up the flames, beyond immediate control of the fire fighters, and lack of water pressure, due to the prolonged drought placed firemen, and the 122 engines, and 52 hose companies under a terrific handicap. An area of almost wo square miles, business and stockyard plants had been destroyed within two hours after the fire broke out.Photo measures 8.5 x 6.5inches. Photo is dated 05-19-1934.
