Description: A graduate of the University of Southern California, he was the first African American to achieve world success in athletics. From 1932 to 1934, he was recognized as the fastest man in the world. He broke the world record for the 100 meters a total of ten times with a time of 10.3, and also set the world record for the 200 meters with a time of 21.0 (in 1933). At the 1932 Olympics, he won a silver medal in the 100 metres and a bronze medal in the 200 metres. Four years later in Berlin, he was a member of the winning US 4 × 100 metres relay team, finishing second in the 100 metres final. After World War II, he turned to politics, first on the Chicago City Council, and from 1971 until his death he served in the House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party.
