Description: By the mid 1980’s I was diving deep into vintage clothing business, working in the film industry and in one of the best vintage clothing stores in the country. There was still quite a bit of 30’s and 40’s clothing in circulation in those days and quite the demand. This is the kind of coat which would give our crew an all stop moment. Even the seasoned tailors and seamstress would join the conversation of - what a wonderful piece of work, and what were they thinking, oh this is very nice, very different, etc. So I’ve spent some time with this one which reminded me of the time afore mentioned. And I am still shaking my head at the craft, the work which went into making it. It reminds me of an Hermes I once had which was likely from the same era. And though it is not Hermes it is the closest comparison in my memory of all coats of this era. The collar or lack thereof is unusual and my oh my, look what they did. Stunning. Very slight padding in the shoulders along with sort of ruffled look at the shoulder seam. Now the satin trim fabric feels older than 30’s. Reminiscent of the Edwardian era. This trim work is fantastic and even after 90 years it lays perfectly. There is no place where it kinked or wrinkled. How is this even possible? The wool is very nice quality, mid weight. But is likely why it has held up so very well. The buttons are a covered button in the style of so many in the 40’s. The lining is a fine silk taffeta. Everything is black black, dark black. So very much, young Barbra Stanwyck. Moving down from no collar and the shoulders which are more fitted like pre 30’s than loose 40’s ahead. There is some room allowed across the chest as it then slightly heads towards the hour glass above the hips. From the hip 31” ever so gradually out to a swinging 56” at the hem. There are no outside pockets and only one small inside pocket for gloves. Why allow pockets to mess with such wonderful lines? Two of the last three photos are super zoomed in on the only flaw I could find. Perhaps 1/16 of an inch. I don’t know what to call it. It is not a thinning, tear, or moth hole. If anything need be done perhaps two very fine stitches. This has been in storage for decades. It could stand a dry cleaning by only the best cleaners. We live a couple hours drive each way from a not so good cleaners so please understand it is best for all involved to take pause and hope you have a good dry cleaner. All exact measurements shown in photos with the exception of length from the collar line down mid back to hem, 39”. Feel free to message with any question you may have.
