Greatest Hans Sachs ever: Friedrich Schorr with Lauritz Melchior and Elisabeth Schumann in a wonderful recording of the Meistersinger Quintet The quintet 'Selig wie die Sonne' from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Hans Sachs - Friedrich Schorr, Eva - Elisabeth Schumann, Walther - Lauritz Melchior, Magdelena - Gladys Parr, David - Ben Williams, London Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Barbirolli, Recorded: May 16, 1931 Aha! De Streicht Die Lene (Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg Act 3)Baritone Vocals – Friedrich SchorrConductor – Albert CoatesOrchestra – London Symphony Orchestra"Before leaving London. Melchior did four days of recording with the London Symphony under several conductors. The works performed with Sir John Barbirolli included the Meistersinger quintet (from the role Melchior had thought he would never sing) and yielded Barbirolli's most famous story about Melchior. At the recording session of May 16th Lauritz ruined one take after another. He could not manage to come in correctly, and the constant repetitions were making Elisabeth Schumann hoarse. Barbirolli was forced to come up with a creative solution to avoid a postponement of the session. The final take was done with Barbirolli's eyes riveted on Melchior. He held one hand over his mouth. Lauritz was bid to to keep his mouth shut until Barbirolli removed his hand. By the time Barbirolli managed to get a reasonably correct reading everyone in the house knew the right notes. Despite all the trouble, Barbirolli often told how immensely fond of Melchior he was and that, in his opinion, this 78-rpm 'classic' recording had turned out wonderfully."Orig Issue HMV Red Label 12" 78 rpm recordCondition: EXCELLENT close to PRISTINE faint scuffs, fine 15 scratch on Lene does not sound, plays very quiet lightest hissA SUPERB COPY More Great Records on sale right now: CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE MORE GREAT RECORDS CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE ALL ITEMS - VINTAGE BOOKS, VICTROLA and TURNTABLE ITEMS, CDs, Books and DVDs http://shop.ebay.com/carsten_sf/m.html ==== A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING: As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
