Having finished her studies Hnni-Mihacsek appeared as a guest at the Vienna State Opera in 1919 for the first time, as the First Lady in Die Zauberfl÷e. After further performances as Helmwige, Woglinde and a Flower Maiden, she officially joined the ensemble the same year. A month later she became the opportunity to sing the Falcon in the world premiere of StraussÆ Die Frau ohne Schatten. Apart from smaller roles during her first season she appeared in big parts such as Micaela, Agathe, Ighino, Dorabella and Elsa (in a new production unter the direction of Richard Strauss). Her second season brought her Sulamith (!) in GoldmarkÆs Die K÷nigin von Saba, Princess Eudora in HalTvyÆ s La Juive, Chrysothemis, Naiade in Ariadne auf Naxos and Donna Elvira, again under the baton of Richard Strauss. Mozart was to become her favorite composer throughout her career. The next season saw her as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. It was Berta Kiurina with whom she shared most of her roles in Vienna. In 1922 Hnni-Mihacsek took over most of KiurinaÆs roles, singing Marie, Amelia, Antonia, Fiordiligi, Margiana in CorneliusÆ Der Barbier von Bagdad, Berthe in Le ProphFte, InFs in LÆAfricaine, Elisabeth and Donna Elvira. Hnni-Mihacsek took part in a number of premieres such as in HindemithÆs Cardillac and PfitznerÆs Das Herz. She even tried the Marschallin, but the role might have come a little early at this stage of her career. After 1932 she appeared fairly often at the Salzburg Festivals. Felicie Hnni-Mihacsek stayed in Vienna until 1925 where she was particularly admired by the direction Richard Strauss-Franz Schalk. Despite her artistic achievements in Vienna she felt strong competion and changed to the Munich State Opera. Here she enjoyed great popularity as one of MunichÆs leading sopranos for the next 20 years, enlarging her extensive repertoire by singing Gilda (!), Eva, Sieglinde and Ariadne. She finished her career in 1945 and became a sought-after tutor, giving her farewell appearance in Munich, 1953, as the Marschallin. The artist was married to the Swiss industrialist Alfred Hnni whose name she had adopted early in her career. Comment: Felicie Hnni-Mihacsek was the prima donna of the Munich State Opera for more than 20 years. Originally a coloratura soprano, she gradually assumed lyric and lyric-dramatic roles. She was generally considered one of the outstanding Mozart sopranos of the inter-war period. When listening to her recordings, she was at home in many styles. To me, one of the best recordings is her Mrs Ford (Nun eilt herbei). Her singing is witty, charming and bubbling over with vitality. Another superb record is for instance KonstanzeÆs ôAch, ich liebte so glncklichö. With the fine German baritone Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender (the father of Brigitte Fassbaender) she recorded a number of duets. Their rendition of the famous scene Nedda - Silvio from Pagliacci, is performed with ærealistic vitalitaÆ. Despite the German language both artists sing with personal approach and dramatic committment to that kind of music. Helge Roswaenge 29 Aug 1897 - 17 Jun 1972 Danish tenor Helge Anton Rosenvinge-Hansen (later Roswaenge, Rosvaenge, Rosvµnge) was born in Copenhagen in 1897 and studied Chemistry at the Technical College in his natal city, where he graduated as an engineer with honours. In voice, he was largely self-taught, but was for a time under the guidance of his wife to be, the hungarian soprano Ilonka Holndonner, whom he met in Schwerin, Germany, where Roswaenge was singing. She immediately recognized his potential and organized a successful concert performance with herself and the tenor. Engagements in smaller German theatres followed and his official debut came in Neustrelitz in 1921 as Don Jose in Carmen. In the years 1924-26 he was engaged by the Opera of Basel, then a member of the K÷ln Opera in the years 1927-30 and then at the Berlin State Opera during the years 1929-45. From 1930, he appeared regularly at the Wien Staatsoper, where he had made a guest appearance in 1927 as Don JosT. Salzburg hired him for the years 1932-39, where he had made his debut in Der Rosenkavalier and he was highly successful in Cairo in 1933 as Radames in Aida. He was also an eminent interpreter of Wagner's operas and sang Parsifal at Bayreuth in 1934 and 1936. The latter year he also made his Covent Garden debut and sang at theatres in Milano, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Brussels, Amsterdam, Munchen, Hamburg and Dresden. "With a steely voice, brilliant high notes and insistent declamation,"¦ Roswaenge was an impressive Andrea Chenier as well as an acclaimed and exciting Otello. Although he never performed the latter role on stage, he was often heard as the jealous stricken Moor on German radio. He was furthermore known as The Knight of the High D. Shortly after the 2nd World War, he was abducted in Berlin and deported to Russia. Following his release, he settled down in Wien and established himself as an engineer in the chemical industry. Yet, singing was very much at the core of his heart, and he resumed his career in 1949 at the Volksoper and the Staatsoper in Wien. In 1951 he received the Gold Ring of the Staatsoper, an honour he only shares with soprano Birgit Nilsson. From 1955 he also sang with the Berlin Staatsoper and was appointed Member of Honour. Roswaenge had a substantial career post-war in both Wien and Berlin, appearing in a wide spectrum of roles ranging from Mozart to Puccini and Verdi and Wagner. At one point he also led a theatre for operetta in Wien, where he himself starred as the Prince Sou Sou-Chong in Lehßr's Land des LSchelns. With the increasing tendency to only perform opera in its original language towards the end of the 1950s, Roswaenge's engagements diminished and among his last successes count the operettas and recialts organized in New York's Carnegie Hall and the Madison Square Garden in 1963 and 1964. Roswaenge then retired from the stage to dedicate himself to vocal pedagogy in Mnnchen, where he passed away in 1972, at the age of 75.
