1928 Oscar [of the Waldorf] Tschirky Typed Letter Signed

Description: Swiss-American restauranteur Oscar Tschirky (1866-1950) neatly signed this brief typed letter to a Seymour van Santvoord on July 21, 1928. Tschirky writes in part: "I have just received the copy of your address to the graduating class of Albany Law School, on June 7th, 1928, together with the address made by Mr. George van Santvoord way back in 1856, and I assure you I appreciate this courtesy of yours very, very much, I know the reading of these addresses will afford me much stimulation of mind." Typed on a 10 5/8" x 8 1/4" sheet of Waldorf-Astoria stationery and signed informally: "Oscar". Swiss-born Tschirky came to the United States in 1883 and started working as a busboy in Manhattan. He became the maître d'hôtel of the famous fine dining restaurant, Delmonico's, and later of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. His position there earned him the moniker "Oscar of the Waldorf".
