Johnny Farrell, 1928 U.S. Champion is being congratulated by the runner-up, Bobby Jones. Also pictured on the far left is Herbert Jacques (a U.S.G.A. president) and Herbert Ramsay on the far right who later became a U.S.G.A. president for 1931 and 1932. At the time of the photo, he was the vice president. Farrell defeated Jones in a 36-hole playoff on Sunday, June 24, 1928. Golf Compendium: Notable Notes: Johnny Farrell made up a 5-shot deficit in the final round, catching Bobby Jones by shooting 72 to Jones' 77. That sent the two of them into a 36-hole playoff for the championship. Farrell led by three strokes after the first 18, and while Jones rallied in the second 18 he couldn't catch Farrell. Farrell won the playoff by one shot, 143 to 144. This is a vintage period photo from 1928, and date stamped June 26, 1928, and it also has a usage date stamp, December 15, 1928, both by N.E.A. (Newspaper Enterprise Association). It is clearly an appealing vintage photo, authenticated and certified by PSA as a Type III made from a duplicate negative. It's clearly apparent that the photo had been prepared for publication to picture only Jones and Farrell as indicated by the placement of the editorial paint, especially to the left of Jones and the right of Farrell. However, it presents nicely and beyond the editorial paint, is in overall good condition and truly looks superb in its PSA holder. PSA Information: With H.H.
