Description: An astonishingly rare 1927 first edition, signed by the editor Winifred L. Chappell, the author of the Foreword Harry F. Ward (Founding Chairman of the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU and a controversial public figure over the entirety of his life), and the artist who created the woodcuts Lynd Ward (Harry's son), one of the most famous woodcut artists of the time, well known for his early wood-engraving novels. A note on the woodcuts, there are two in this edition, along with the faded illustrations inside the front and back covers. The larger woodcut featuring a cityscape in this copy is different from other first editions I have seen. It's possible this is a proof or prepublication copy, which might explain the signatures. It is difficult to overstate the incredible rarity of this book -- as far as I can tell, the only copy in existence to bear the signatures of all three individuals. A fantastic piece of American history, literary history, art history, all wrapped up in one small book. In ok vintage condition. There are several tears, and sadly, most of pages 17/18 are gone. Some discoloration and spots/scuffs. Please review photos carefully and ask any questions before bidding.
